D.C.
Washington DC heavily targeted for Verichip marketing -- March
15, 2006
"The two Washington, D.C., residents are
among just a handful of Americans who have had the tiny
electronic VeriChip inserted since the government approved it two
years ago. But the chip is being aggressively marketed by its
manufacturer, which is targeting Washington (
D.C.) to be the first metropolitan area with multiple hospitals
equipped to read the device, a persuasive
factor for Fischer and Hickey. Within weeks, the first hospital
is expected to announce plans to start routinely scanning all
emergency-room patients ....
Many of the hospitals, including three in the
Washington area, have received scanners and started training
their emergency-room staffs in their use, he said. Procter
declined to name the hospitals until they formally announce their
plans.
One area doctor has begun implanting the chips.
"I thought this would be important to offer to many of my
patients," said Jonathan Musher, a Chevy Chase, Md.,
physician the company hired to help recruit
hospitals and assemble a
nationwide network of doctors
offering the chips.
"With this, a quick scan back and forth across their arm
could make all the difference in critical life-and-death
situations where seconds count."......
As far as I can tell, there are no security
measures taken with the chip. It's not a secure chip," said
Richard M. Smith, an Internet and privacy
consultant in Boston. "There's nothing
to stop someone from accessing the code and cloning the
chip" to access records, he said.
Even though the medical information is stored in a protected
computer, anyone with a password could obtain the information."

The microchip, which is slightly larger
than a grain of rice, stores six lines of text and 128 characters
and emits a 125-kHz radio frequency signal that is detected by a
special scanner up to four feet away. It is similar to the
biochips that are used to identify pets and livestock......
In South America, the chip is being commercialized as a way to
identify kidnapping victims who are drugged, unconscious or dead.
In that market, the chip is being bundled with the company's

Digital Angel [ locator ] lands in China...Sherrie Gossett--March
28-2002
The emergence of Digital Angel has met with
protests from civil libertarians in the United States who are
concerned over potential involuntary applications of
injectable tracking chips. But an area of even greater
concern may be its use in China. After all, China currently has
one of the world's worst human rights records. Over the years,
human rights organizations like Amnesty International, Freedom
House and the Laogai Research Foundation have documented
widespread persecution in China of political dissidents and
religious persons. Such persecution routinely includes
surveillance and arrest of innocent persons who
are then sent to slave labor camps, mental hospitals or
"re-education" facilities.
Time will tell if the injectable chips will be used
eventually to track the movements of dissidents, in order to
round up friends, family members and locate secret meetings.
Recent news reports have documented Christian believers using
cell-phone codes to arrange secret prayer meetings, and the rural
government officials committing protesters to
psychiatric facilities where they are "treated."

Although uberveillance was only in its

"Anyone with a mobile phone can be tracked to 15m now,"

now contained GPS receivers and radio frequency identification

"The worst scenario is the absolute loss of human

in the world would be fingerprinted and registered under a

ministers including Australian Immigration Minister Philip
