Tracking the Elderly -- Sept. 16, 2007
Microchips keep track of aging Seniors -- Mark Baard
In order for the elderly to live at home longer, however, CAST
believes seniors will have to sacrifice much of their privacy.
Doctors and nurses will need
to use RFID and other sensor technologies to keep tabs on them
more frequently.
It is unknown whether the elderly will accept this high level of
electronic supervision.
Both the Caregiver's Assistant and the Memory Mirror read
RFID-tagged items to keep track of their subjects. By placing the
tags on items around the home, health-care workers can tell
whether and when a patient has taken aspirin or prepared a cup of
tea.

"While there are positives associated with
this usage, some argue that RFID implants are a
violation of human rights, especially in the case of a person
with Alzheimer's who cannot give his consent to the procedure due
to his cognitive condition."
According to an ABC News report that ran in August, certain
privacy groups are arguing the VeriMed and other related
instruments, "strip Alzheimer's patients of their
dignity." "I don't think that because it's useful in
animals is a reason why we should do it in human beings,"
Katherine Albrecht, founder of Antichip.com, a Web
site that openly refutes the use of such materials in humans,
told ABC.
Officials with the ethics
advisory panel of the Alzheimer's Association, an entity that
claims to be the leading voluntary health organization in U.S.

permanent nature or implanted into those with Alzheimer's. Nor do
they endorse any such product or service.
If people out there think the chip isn't ethically appropriate,
that's their individual choice," she added. "It's a
free country."
That's why the program has been strictly voluntary per the
approval and consent of the individual's caregiver, Barnes said

"HIPAA does not come into play unless the

is not currently covered by insurance , so there will be no

"Patient-First" : desperately discounting Verichip;
revenue from required subscription-- Sept. 4, 20007
The PATIENT FIRST model enables all patients to
access the VeriMed Patient Identification System for no cost up-front and a nominal monthly subscription.
The VeriMed Patient Identification System, which utilizes an
implantable RFID microchip in combination with a handheld RFID
scanner and a secure patient database, provides immediate access
to important health information for patients who arrive at an
emergency department unable to communicate. This program will
enhance the marketability of the System by reducing patient's
up-front costs. The new program will also create a
recurring revenue model for the Company sooner than
expected. The Company's prior program required at least a
$200 direct payment by the patient at the physician's office.
Our new PATIENT FIRST marketing program will enable us to
significantly ramp up our business
http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2007/09/04/2909001.htm
Scott R. Silverman, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer of VeriChip Corporation, said, Our new PATIENT FIRST
marketing program will enable us to significantly ramp up our
business as we increase our focus on the patient. This
fundamental change will eliminate what we believe presents an
obstacle to patients and physicians. Many physicians are
uncomfortable asking their patients to pay anything more than
their co-pay. Similarly, many patients are not used to writing a
check to their physician for a medical procedure.
As we continue our process of pursuing third-party insurance and
CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid) reimbursement, we believe
that PATIENT FIRST enables patients and physicians to participate
in a more patient-friendly payment model while providing the
Company with increased revenue opportunities from the VeriMed
Patient Identification System over the next 18 months. http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20070904005529&newsLang=en

pleased, without being tracked, unless they were harming someone
else
Chipping, these critics said, might start with
Alzheimer's patients or Army Rangers, but would eventually be
suggested for convicts, then parolees, then sex offenders, then
illegal aliens -- until one day, a majority of
Americans, falling into one category or another, would find
themselves electronically tagged.

RFID, they warned, would soon enable the government to "frisk" citizens
electronically -- an invisible, undetectable search
performed by readers posted at
"hotspots" along roadsides and in pedestrian areas.
It might even be used to squeal on employees while they worked;
time spent at the water cooler, in the bathroom, in a designated
smoking area could one day be broadcast, recorded and compiled in
off-limits, company databases.

Verichip for the masses ?? June 12, 2007
Interestingly, not much else was said about
future rollouts beyond this small sample trial, but we can't
imagine these not showing up en masse (and in humans) once it
gets the green light from regulators.

Promotional Kits
But the campaign to build use of the technology
is primarily word-of-mouth. The company's distributor is offering
"starter kits" to physicians, which include the scanner
and 10 chips, as part of its campaign to build up use. The goal
is for those physicians to recommend the chip to high-risk
patients, those that are likely to show up at an emergency room
unconscious, making the data on the chip the only fast way to
pull up medical history.

MedicAlert Bracelet
There are other technologies that are far less invasive and can
achieve the same goal," she said.
Albrecht promotes the MedicAlert bracelet as the ideal way to
solve the problem of Alzheimer's patients who cannot relay their
medical information reliably. MedicAlert bracelets bear a
recognizable medical symbol on the outside and have the patient's
medical conditions listed on the back

This is a very invasive procedure and unless

Vigil for vulnerable patients -- May 12, 2007
" The centre, which cares for children with Down's
syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism, was in the media spotlight two years ago when it
considered using VeriChip's device in a similar study on its
patients, a plan that has since been put on the back burner.
"Privacy advocates say that it is precisely
this helplessness that makes the proposed use
of the tags unacceptable.
"This is a community that is not in a
position to give fully informed consent or to say no,"
says Katherine Albrecht of CASPIAN, a Florida-based consumer
rights organisation. "The nature of the disease is that they can't fully understand."
Albrecht likens "the violent and invasive act" of
implanting a chip in someone who does not have the ability to
consent to the act of rape. Others agree with the sentiment, if
not the comparison. "This is by definition
a way of doing something that denies a person control,"
says Lee Tien of the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San
Francisco. "If that doesn't strike at the heart of human
dignity, I don't know what does."
He and Albrecht would rather see a chip implanted in a bracelet.

VeriMed Patient Identification System
-- Feb. 26, 2007 please see also www.cybertime.net/~ajgood/medchip.html
"Target market for The VeriMed system
consists of people who are more likely to require emergency
medical care, persons with cognitive impairment, persons with chronic diseases and related conditions,
and persons with implanted medical devices. CHIP believes
their system will be of use for emergency personnel and first
responders.
Personally, I foresee a myriad of technology issues here. If
these systems are sold to healthcare plans, hospitals or
individual potential patients, to hold any value whatsoever the
unresponsive future patient would have to be at or taken to a
facility using the database with that patients information.
If these were purchased by facilities, they're already going to
have medical information readily available for their patients in
their existing databases.
This system would only have value if a patient is brought in
'cold' meaning a hospital or facility would have no existing
information on this patient. That is the entire purpose of
reading the implanted chip. In that case, what really would be
the odds that an implanted patient would just happen to end up
being taken to a facility or hospital that bought the system and
has access to the database linking the patients implanted chip
with the patient information????
.... If the person is institutionalized, that institution will already have information readily
available for this person in case of an emergency, so
an implant would be of little added help. These would work and be
of use only in situations in which the responders had no
information on an unresponsive patient...and would require a lot
of luck in matching up an implanted patient with a facility that
purchased access to the database"

IMMIGRANTS,
MIGRANTS, REFUGEES
etc.
Mandatory chipping of Immigrants ??? -- Oct. 5, 2007
The D.C. area contractors' moves will likely stir
up a hornet nest of privacy concerns. The issue is
strikingly similar to the fears surrounding RFID implants and the
prospect of mandatory chipping. Last year Scott Silverman,
Chairman of the Board of VeriChip Corporation, who make the only FDA
approved RFID implant, proposed a solution to the problem of illegal
immigration -- mandatory microchipping of guest
workers and anyone found to be illegally dwelling in or trying to
enter the U.S. The previous
day President Bush, whose former head of the Department of Health
and Human Sciences Tommy Thompson is currently serving on
Verichip's board, had called for "high-tech
measures to solve the immigration problem."
There is significant pending and passed legislation that aims to
protect constituents from unwanted intrusion and scanning. As
reported by DailyTech, California's state Senate
recently passed a bill banning companies or anyone else from
forcing a California citizen to be involuntarily
microchipped.
These issues will not go away as technology becomes more and more
entrenched in our day to day lives. People will likely
struggle with these complex moral issues as they ponder whether
the benefits of increased safety are worth someone being able
to watch them in their daily lives.

First they came for the immigrants ....
The slippery slope in this argument is that
weve already tracked cargo, then pets and cattle.
Next, we will track immigrants. Who do you
think is the last stop? Thats right. Its
you. The government is going to shove a leash [ Ed - on you
] and youll like it.
Within a short period of time, youll not even notice
its there
There is no way to justify implanting legal,
foreign nationals who have chosen to live here. In
order to do it, you would have to chip every
American citizen as well. Then, you would be
faced with the prospect of what you are going to do with the
illegal citizens who have no chips? They will stick out in
a field of chipped Americans and the government will no longer be
able to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration. Worse yet,
would be the tit-for-tat retaliation that other countries will enforce
against the United States.

"If any man worship the beast
and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his
hand,
the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God,
which is poured out without mixture into the cup of His
indignation;
and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence
of the Lamb:
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up forever and ever:
and they have no rest day nor night,
who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the
mark of his name."
